750MC Hot Hatch Championship
Ian Williamson is a Sergeant in the MPS, currently racing in the 750MC Hot Hatch Championship. This is a past event which took place in 2019 and here is a write-up and photos of his exploits:-
After what seemed a long winter the first race weekend of the season was upon us. The winter had been a time to refresh the car and install some new upgrades to the car, whilst continuing racing within the Hot Hatch Championship in Class C, run by the 750 Motor Club. Ian was eager to continue the form he had shown in the second half of 2018, with a Brands Hatch target of a podium in each race.
After setting two-lap records in 2018 and after some positive winter testing, Ian was determined to achieve the same feat at his home circuit. That was until the weather had its own ideas for race day!
As the 35 grid strong cars lined up for qualifying, the rain could be seen getting closer to the circuit. Ian knew it was vital to warm the tyres and get a reasonable lap in quickly. This time was shortened further by a red flag and in came the rain! Overall Ian had to be happy with P2 in class and P8 on the grid, in the circumstances.
Race 1 came around and the weather could not have been more unpredictable if it had tried. After long team discussions it was decided to take a gamble on the rain stopping through the race, so ran with dry tyres and setup. Ian was aware that the BMW on class pole was starting the race on wets, so at the start of the race, in the rain, he knew he had to try to stay as close as he could to the leader for when the rain stopped. All was going to plan, the rain subsided and Ian caught and passed to take the lead of the race. What the team did not account for was the further downpour of rain and hail, making it very difficult conditions. This was made even more difficult when the car’s rear corner was clipped by a competitor causing Ian to drift sideward and be contacted by a separate competitor. With the front bumper now loose on one side and rubbing against a tyre, Ian was not able to hold off the same BMW, in the ever increasing rain. Ian managed to get the car to the finish line, taking 2nd position.
The track had completely dried for Race 2 and after getting a great start Ian managed to be leading the class into the first corner. With the mega quick BMW staying with him on track and being held up on the circuit’s corners by more powerful class B cars, the spectators were going to be in for a good race. Ian put in some hugely impressive lap times, which gained him some clear track. Ian sprinted to the finish remaining in 1st position and setting a new class lap record of 57.04 along the way. Ian and the team clearly showing they have the pace and package for a potentially very good season.
Ian leaves Brands Hatch currently leading the championship by 1 point but with the knowledge, it is going to be a long, tough season ahead.
A massive thank you to everyone who came along on Brands to help and support, and we look forward to seeing you all the next race at Castle Combe.
